Airtel collaborates with Matter Motor: IoT Integration for Aera E-Bikes
New Delhi: Bharti Airtel, the second-largest carrier in India, has entered into a collaboration with tech startup Matter Motor Works to incorporate e-sims into Aera electric gear bikes. Over the course of three years, Matter plans to ship more than 300,000 bikes equipped with Airtel’s IoT solution, marking a significant milestone for the telecom company.
Under the partnership, the initial phase will involve enabling 60,000 Matter bikes with Airtel e-sims, with shipments scheduled to commence from September-October. Pre-booking for these bikes has been available since May 17.
The integration of Airtel’s IoT platform, known as “Airtel IoT Hub,” will enable real-time tracking of the vehicles, providing performance monitoring through advanced analytics, and ensuring high reliability with telco-grade security measures. With the e-sims in place, riders will have access to real-time vehicle data, leading to an enhanced riding experience.
The e-sims will be seamlessly embedded and integrated into the bike’s interface. A long-term agreement has been signed between Matter and Airtel, establishing a cost-based model tied to the number of vehicles sold. Harish Laddha, CEO of Airtel’s emerging business, stated, “We are unable to disclose the contract’s value. However, under this agreement, Matter will offer connected vehicle technology to its customers, granting them real-time access to their vehicle data.”
Laddha emphasized that customer consent will be obtained during vehicle sales, after which the SIM activation process will take place. Furthermore, the collected information will be encrypted and securely stored to safeguard customer privacy and prevent unauthorized access.
Arun Pratap Singh, co-founder and Group COO of Matter, shared with Mint that the data collected will include vehicle parameters and performance data, which will be transmitted to Matter’s data server. This data will enhance vehicle communication, facilitate improved information transmission, and provide users with various features such as geofencing, vehicle health status, riding status, tracking information, and more.
