ABB India Wins Contract for Automation at ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel

ABB India, a prominent provider of electrification and automation solutions, has been selected to deliver advanced systems for the steel cold rolling mill (CRM) of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) in Hazira, Gujarat. This significant contract was awarded through John Cockerill India Limited (JCIL), the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the project.

AM/NS India, a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, aims to establish the new CRM as part of its strategic expansion plan. ABB India will supply sophisticated electrification and automation systems, including the cutting-edge ABB Abilityâ„¢ System 800xA distributed control system (DCS) and associated components. These solutions will enhance energy efficiency, optimize zinc consumption, and ensure high levels of corrosion resistance throughout the steel production process. The implementation of ABB’s technology will play a vital role in AM/NS India’s commitment to achieving higher sustainability standards at their Hazira facility.

Mr. Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), emphasized the company’s dedication to creating intelligent steels for a brighter future. This expansion will help fulfill the rising demand for high-end steel while bolstering AM/NS India’s portfolio of sustainable and value-added steel products.

Frédéric Midy, Project Director at John Cockerill Industry, expressed his pride in being chosen by such a reputable steel manufacturer to supply highly automated processing lines. He emphasized the significance of this contract in advancing the mission of John Cockerill, stating, “The fight against climate change is an integral part of our mission. This new contract not only allows us to support AM/NS India on its sustainability journey but also contributes to the country’s low-carbon economy goals.”

Vinod C, Local Division Manager of Process Industries at ABB, noted the collaboration with JCIL on this remarkable project and its positive impact on AM/NS India’s development of a sustainable, efficient, and modern steel operation.

The commissioning of the new CRM, equipped with advanced processing lines, is scheduled for 2024.

AM/NS India, a leading integrated flat carbon steel producer in India, possesses a crude steel capacity of 9 million metric tons per annum, along with state-of-the-art downstream facilities. The company offers a diverse range of flat steel products, including value-added steel, and boasts a pellet capacity of 20 million metric tons.
