Reliance Jio Eyes World’s Largest 5G Network by Year End, Promises Affordable Services
Reliance Jio, India’s leading telecom operator, is set to become the world’s largest pure 5G network operator this year, with a promise to deliver affordable services to the masses. Speaking to PTI at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Reliance Jio President Mathew Oommen shared the company’s plans for 5G rollout, adding that Jio will be the largest 5G SA (standalone) network operator globally by H2 2023.
Oommen emphasized Jio’s commitment to support India’s inclusive growth, noting that the company’s 5G SA network rollout will ensure that advanced services and capabilities are available to everyone at affordable rates.
The announcement comes amid competitor Bharti Airtel’s push for a hike in mobile call and data service prices, with Airtel Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal revealing earlier this week that rates will go up this year due to the low return on capital in the telecom business. While Bharti Airtel is rolling out a mix of 5G and 4G services through its non-standalone 5G (NSA) network, Reliance Jio has focused solely on 5G SA rollout, covering over 300 cities in India. In contrast, Airtel’s network is currently available in over 140 cities.
With Reliance Jio’s ambitious 5G plans and commitment to affordable services, the telecom industry in India is set for a major transformation in the coming months.
